10/11/07 Waltham Varsity Falls Again to Arlington Catholic

Hopes of avenging their only loss of the season fell short as the Hawks lost to Arlington Catholic 1-3. Waltham endured a score of 8-25 in game 1 before eventually coming to life. However, the Cougars prevailed in a rollercoaster battle in games 2-4 with the Hawks earning scores of 22-25, 25-20, 20-25.

The LadyHawks fall to 11-2 overall and still remain perfect in the GBL at 9-0.

Senior Middle Hitter/Co-Captain Samantha Lupinski returned to the lineup and led the Hawk offense with 6 Kills, 1 Service Point and 4 Blocks. Senior Middle Hitter Fordeline Thermitus followed with some extremely powerful shots that resulted in 4 Kills and 1 Service Ace and 1 Block.

The Hawks continued to get some strong serving from Junior Melanie McCluskey who powered a 5 point run in game 2 and earned 3 service points, as well as 1 Kill. Senior Setter Julia Paltseva posted 2 kills in addition to her 2 service points and a serve run that resulted in 6 Waltham points in game 3. Senior Co-Captain and Libero Amanda Micco passed well in the later games to set up the Hawk attack and also served well earning 3 points at the line.

The JV team lost to AC in a 2 game match and fall below the .500 mark at 6-7 on the season.

10/10/07 Waltham Varsity Edges Out Arlington in Another Tremendous GBL Battle

Facing a vastly improved and fiercely determined Arlington team - Waltham Varsity was pushed to the limit in this second meeting of GBL powers. The Hawks eventually prevailed in a rollercoaster match 25-23, 16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10.

The LadyHawks improve to 11-1 overall and still remain perfect in the GBL at 9-0.

Senior Middle Hitter Fordeline Thermitus led the Waltham offense with 10 Kills and 1 Service Ace. Senior Outside Hitter Jessica Lundberg had 5 Kills and Senior Setter Julia Paltseva had 4 Tip/Kills.

The Hawks also got some strong serving from Junior Melanie McCluskey who earned 6 service points and also added 3 Kills. Cathy Ordile was also strong on the serve line with 4 Aces while adding 2 Kills at the net. Senior Co-Captain and Libero Amanda Micco passed extremely well to set up the Hawk attack and also served well and scored 2 Aces.

The JV team lost to Alrington in a 3-game match and fall to the .500 mark at 6-6 on the season. Meanwhile, JV-B notched its 3rd win of the season with an impressive 2-0 win over Arlington.

10/5/07 Waltham Varsity Tops Cambridge in Clash of GBL Leaders

For the second game in a row, the Waltham Varsity Volleyball team stumbled in game 1 of a GBL match. This time the Hawks fell to Cambridge R&L 25-18 before rallying and taking the match by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-21.

The LadyHawks start the second half of the season at 10-1 overall and still perfect in the GBL at 8-0.

Waltham posted 24 kills, 15 points off serve and 5 blocks. Senior Middle Hitter Fordeline Thermitus led all players with 9 kills, 3 service points and 3 blocks. Senior Cathy Ordile also provided a strong performance with great passing, 6 service points and 4 kills.

Senior Outside Hitter Jessica Lundberg came on strong, especially towards the end of the match. She earned 5 kills and had a block. Junior Melanie McCluskey added 5 kills, 1 service point and a block.

The JV and Freshman teams lost to Cambridge and fall to 6-5 on the season and 2-6 respectively.

10/3/07 Waltham Varsity & JV Finish Out 1st Half of Season with Wins Over GBL Foe Revere

The Waltham Varsity Volleyball team stumbled in game 1 against Revere falling 22-25 before the Hawk players regained composure and took the match by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-8.

The LadyHawks complete the first half of the season at 9-1 overall and perfect in the GBL at 7-0.

Junior Kate Logan propelled the Hawks with her strong serving in game 2 pounding out a 10 point run. From that point in the match the Hawks never looked back. Logan continued to serve strong throughout the match along with senior Cathy Ordile.

Senior Kirby Hunter came on strong with a tremendous performance hitting and blocking in the front row. Senior Julia Paltseva also had a strong performance setting for the Hawks and serving tough.

Waltham JV picked up a win finishing the first half of the season at 6-4.

10/2/07 Waltham Varsity Wins a Thriller on the Road Versus Strong DCL Foe Bedford

On the road - against a very strong Dual County League team, the Waltham Varsity Volleyball team (8-1, 6-0 GBL) netted one of its most impressive wins of the season with a 3-1 victory over Bedford.

After losing a tight game 1 by the score of 21-25, the Hawks rallied to wins of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-19 to secure the match. Waltham also had to juggle the line up to cover for Seniors Jessica Lundberg and Sabine Ferdinand who were unavailable to play.

Senior co-captain and middle hitter Sam Lupinski led the team with 15 of the team's 30 kills while also serving up 6 aces. Senior middle hitter Fordeline Thermitus also had a great game tallying 6 kills, 4 service points and 2 blocks.

Senior outside hitter Cathy Ordile had 3 kills and an ace. Senior setter Julia Paltseva scored 2 kills and 3 service points. Junior Melanie McCluskey played both right side and outside hitter adding 2 kills and 4 service points in the process.

Senior co-captain Amanda Micco dug and passed well from the Libero postion and added 2 service aces. Senior Kirby Hunter also performed well with a kill and a block while filling the outside hitter spot in games 1 and 2.

JV and JV-B each suffered 0-2 losses to Bedford.

9/27/07 Waltham Varsity Serves Up Another GBL Road Victory with Win Over Malden Tornadoes

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team saw strong serving power the Hawks to another 3-0 GBL sweep, this time over Malden.

The Hawks fired up 34 points from the service line as they scored 25-12, 25-7, 25-7 victories. Waltham improves to 7-1 overall and remains undefeated in GBL play at 6-0.

Senior setter Julia Paltseva again led the Hawks serve attack with 12 points. Her strong serves helped the Hawks earn scoring runs of 6 consecutive points in game 2 and 7 points to close out game 3.

Senior libero and co-captain Amanda Micco followed close behind with 11 service points. Her serving supported a 12 point run in game 1 and a 6 point stretch in game 2.

On offense, senior co-captain Sam Lupinski led the attack with 4 kills, 2 blocks and an ace - despite only limited time on the court. Senior Fordeline Thermitus added 3 kills on the day.

JV and JV-B each suffered a 1-2 loss to Malden.

9/26/07 Seven Waltham Varsity Players Inducted into WHS-National Honor Society

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team is proud to announce that 7 of its senior players earned membership into the National Honor Society. These student-athletes were inducted in a formal ceremony on Wednesday night.

9/26/07 Volleyball Teams to Join in WHS Athletes Clean Waltham Day -Saturday October 13th

The Waltham High School Varsity, JV and JV-B Girls Volleyball teams will join fellow student-athletes in the 2nd Annual WHS Athletes Clean Waltham Day on Saturday, October 13th.

Coaches and athletes will meet at the WHS parking lot at 10:00 am and be assigned various areas of Waltham to help clean. Participants are encouraged to bring work gloves and plan on working until noon.

Following this great community service event, the Mayor's office will provide pizza and soda for the student-athletes.

9/25/07 Waltham JV-B Falls on the Road to Former GBL Foe Peabody

The Waltham High School JV-B Girls Volleyball team suffered its second straight loss at the hands of former GBL foe Peabody. The LadyHawks played tough but came up short. The JV-B team joins up with Varsity and JV on the road at Malden on Thursday.

9/24/07 Waltham Varsity and JV Launch Road Trip with Victory Over GBL Foe Somerville

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team served up a strong performance as they swept Somerville on the road 3-0.

The Hawks combined for 31 points from the service line as they scored 25-11, 25-10, 25-11 victories. Waltham improves to 6-1 overall and remains undefeated in GBL play at 5-0.

Senior Setter Julia Paltseva led the Hawks serve attack with 14 points and runs that stretched 7 and 14 points. She also added a kill. Junior Kate Logan continued her strong serving with 7 points and one run that saw the Hawks score 9 straight points.

Senior Middle Hitter Fordeline Thermitus added 5 serve points and 2 kills. Senior Co-Captain Middle Hitter Sam Lupinski contributed 4 kills and 2 blocks.

JV earned their 5th win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Somerville. JV-B played at home and lost to Beverly High School 0-2.

9/20/07 Waltham Varsity Returns to Winning Ways & Remains Undefeated in GBL with Win Over Everett

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team bounced back from its loss to AC with a victory over GBL opponent Everett on Thursday at the Connors Gym.

The Hawks swept Everett 3-0 to improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the GBL. Waltham started off sluggish in game 1 and got by 25-20. The Hawks came together in the last two games winning 25-9 and 25-13.

Waltham produced strong offensive play with 21 kills and also added 25 points from the service line and 5 blocks at the net.

Senior Co-Captain Sam Lupinski, earned 9 points from the serve line and added 4 blocks and 4 kills. Senior Setter Julia Paltseva also served well scoring 6 points from the line. Senior Outside Hitters Cathy Ordile and Jess Lundberg each had 5 kills.

JV earned their 4th win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Everett.

9/19/07 Varsity Suffers 1st Loss of Season in Non-League Contest Against Arlington Catholic

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team dropped its first match of the season to traditional D2 powerhouse Arlington Catholic.

The Hawks fell 0-3 to the visiting Cougars. Waltham played hard and went toe-to-toe with AC in games 1 and 3. The final scores were 25-27, 12-25 and 22-25.

Numerous passing, serving and hitting errors plaqued the Hawks throughout the match, especially in game 2.

The JV team earned their third win of the season with a 2-0 victory, while the JV-B team also won 2-0 picking up its second win of the season.

9/17/07 Waltham Varsity & JV Earn 2nd Home Victories with Wins Over GBL Oppenent Medford

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Greater Boston League with a victory over Medford High School Monday.

The Hawks once again saw strong performances from the entire team and swept the Mustangs by scores of 25-12, 25-16, 25-11.

Senior Captain Sam Lupinski led the Hawk offense again tallying 9 kills, 6 serve aces, 4 serves with no return and 1 block. Senior outside hitter Cathy Ordile tallied 8 kills while Senior middle hitter Fordeline Thermitus posted 6 kills.

Junior right side hitter Melanie McCluskey continued her strong serving adding 8 points including 5 aces. Senior setter Julia Paltseva had 4 serve points. Junior outside hitter Kate Logan added 2 aces and a kill.

The JV team earned their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory including a dramatic 26-24 final in game 3.

9/14/07 Waltham Varsity and JV Net Wins in Home Opener Against GBL Foe Arlington

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team jumped to a 3-0 overall record and 2-0 in the Greater Boston League with a victory over Arlington High School Friday.

The Hawks home opener featured strong performances from the entire team and resulted with a sweep of the SpyPonders by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-14.

Senior Captain Sam Lupinski led the Hawk offense again tallying 11 kills, 5 serve aces and 2 blocks. Junior right side hitter Melanie McCluskey continued her strong play adding 1 kill and serving 10 aces. Senior setter Julia Paltseva had 7 assists and served up 3 aces.

The JV team notched their first win of the season and first under new Coach Carolyn Henjes with a 2-1 victory. The JV-B team also went 3 games but came up short against Arlington 1-2.

9/12/07 Waltham Varsity Volleyball Wraps Up Road Trip Bringing Home First GBL Win and 2nd Victory of '07

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team claimed its first Greater Boston League victory of the 2007 season by defeating the Cambridge R&L Falcons on the road 3-1.

The Hawks fought hard against the league powerhouse and posted scores of 25-12, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-22 during the match to move their overall season record to 2-0 (1-0 GBL).

Senior Captain Sam Lupinski led the Hawk offense along with strong performances from outside hitter Jessica Lundberg and right side hitter Melanie McCluskey. Senior middle Fordeline Thermitus also contributed strong net play along with great serving and hitting from outside hitter Cathy Ordile. The team was also backed up by strong passing and serving from senior captain and libero Amanda Micco.

The JV team sufffered their second loss (1-2) of the season at the hands of the falcons but the JV-B team landed their first victory with a 2-1 win.

9/10/07 Waltham Varsity Volleyball Claims First Victory with 2007 Season Opening Win on the Road at Newton South

The Waltham High School Varsity Girls Volleyball team launched the 2007 campaign with an impressive road win over Dual County League foe Newton South Monday afternoon.

The Hawks won the non-league match 3-1 with scores of 25-21, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-11.

After jumping out to a quick win in game 1 the Hawks hit a bump in game 2. A poor passing stretch threatened to place game 2 out of Waltham's reach. But the team rallied and claimed game 2.

The Lady Hawks lost game 3 but regrouped and won a convincing game 4.

Both JV and JV-B sufffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Lions.

8/15/07 Waltham Volleyball 2007 Tryout Schedule Released - Competition Begins August 23rd

Waltham High School Girls Volleyball will conduct its 2007 tryouts starting August 23rd at the Connors Gym.

You can view a detailed schedule of tryouts and double sessions by clicking the logo to the right.

All students are reminded they must be present at both tryouts to compete for a spot on the team.

Students must also have all paperwork completed PRIOR to trying out. Without ALL the paperwork completed properly students are NOT allowed on the court.

8/14/07 WHS Posts The Updated 2007 Varsity, Junior Varsity and JV-B Schedules

Waltham High School Girls Volleyball announces its official 2007 Varsity, Junior Varsity and JV-B schedules. This year the Hawks will face several new opponents including Bishop Fenwick and future Dual County League (DCL) rivals Newton South and Bedford High School. JV-B will aslo face Beverly High School.

This year will mark the last of Waltham competing in the Greater Boston League (GBL). In 2008, Waltham will join Arlington in the move to the DCL. Peabody has already left the GBL. For 2007, Revere will be an official GBL scheduling volleyball team and Malden will also officially compete for league standings and the title.

8/12/07 CATZ Strength and Conditioning Program Returns to Waltham Preseason Schedule



Offical Provider of Strength and Conditioning Programs to the USA Men's National Volleyball Team
Instructors from Competitive Athlete Training Zone (CATZ) will return to Waltham High for the second straight year during double sessions. These certified professionals teach volleyball sport specific strength and conditioning exercises.

CATZ will conduct a two-hour training session on Monday August 27 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for all three Waltham Volleyball teams.


8/10/07 Waltham Set to Host 2nd Annual MetroBoston Volleyball Summit August 29th

Waltham Volleyball will play host to the 2nd Annual MetroBoston Volleyball Summit on Wednesday August 29th in the Connors and Cohen Gyms. The preseason jamboree will feature the Hawks and teams from Arlington, Cambridge, Concord and Newton South.

A healthy lunch will be provided by Know Fat and served in the WHS cafeteria. The event will end with another tremendous presentation from the Bentley College Women's Volleyball Team on the topics of sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork.


7/1/07 Waltham Volleyball Hires New Junior Varsity and JV-B Coaches

Waltham Volleyball is proud to announce the appointment of two new coaches for the 2007 season. Carolyn Henjes will take over the reigns of the Junior Varsity program while Valerie Librizzi will guide the JV-B team.

Henjes played 4 years of volleyball at Walpole High School while also playing basketball and softball. She went on to play basketball for Regis College. She currently serves as a full-time preschool teacher.

Librizzi is an English teacher at Waltham High School and also a leader of the Freshman mentor program.

5/1/07 Karen Murphy Steps Down as JV Coach but Will Remain as an Assistant Coach



Waltham Volleyball regrets to announce that Karen Murphy will be stepping down as the Junior Varsity Coach due to her full-time work and family commitments. Fortunately, Coach Karen will continue to serve the school as a volunteer assistant for the volleyball program.

During her three seasons with the Hawks, Karen emassed an impressive 41-19 record including last year's 17-3 season. We thank Karen for all her hard work over the years and her contribution to Waltham Volleyball both as a coach and player.


4/08/07 Kate Collins Murphy Latest Addition to WHS Volleyball Family

Coaches Karen and Michael Murphy proudley announce the birth of their daughter Kate Collins Murphy. She was born at 5:15 pm and weighed in at 8 lbs, 14 ounces. Mom, baby, CJ and Dad are all doing well.

Daughter Kate will be looking forward to checking out her first volleyball game this fall.




4/1/07 Melissa Pineau Resigns JV-B Coaching Position

Waltham Volleyball announces that Melissa Pineau has resigned her position as JV-B Coach. Melissa is now working full time in her career as a hair stylist and will not be available to coach due to her work schedule.

We wish Melissa the best in her career and thank her for her hard work and dedication to the program both as a coach and former player.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has selected Waltham Volleyball varsity-head coach Michael Murphy as a finalist in its 2005-2006 Grant Burger Media Awards Contest.

This award honors Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.

The AVCA expanded the media award’s scope in 2004-05 by having a finalist in four different categories: broadcast, print, web and sports information/athletic communications.
