Tryout Schedule
Training Camp - Double Sessions
Who Should Tryout? We encourage everyone who wants to play to try out for the team. Seniors must try out for and are only eligible to play on varsity. Freshman will be required to tryout for the freshman team and may be invited to tryout for higher-level teams. Returning varsity players will tryout for varsity. All others (juniors and sophmores) must tryout for junior varisty but may be invited to tryout for the varsity team.Eligibility and PaperworkYou must have a current physical (within 13 months) and all paperwork (Parental Permission Form and Release From Liability Yellow Card) completed prior to trying out for the team. Students who show up with out proper paperwork will not be allowed to tryout. You must be present for tryouts to make the team unless you have extreme circumstances and have been granted an exception by head coach, Mike Murphy. You may then be possibly granted an opportunity to tryout for the team at a later date. However, all rules restricting playing time due to missing of practices will be enforced in accordance with MIAA regulations.Commitment to the TeamStudents interested in playing should be well aware of the serious time commitment that is required as a team member. The team practices or plays games at least five (5) days per week, usually Monday - Friday. The season goes from August 24 through the end of October and may continue into November (for varsity) if the team makes the tournament. Players must attend all practices and all games unless they are absent from school.Cuts may be necessaryAlthough we would love to be able to take on all students that tryout for the team, cuts may be necessary. Only six players can be on a volleyball court at one time. We anticipate that Varsity, JV and Freshman teams will keep a range of 12-18 players, each. During the Fall 2004 season we kept all players - nearly 70 girls. This number proved to be simply too much. Playing time for all was limited. Substitutions became more of a distraction rather than an opportunity for quality playing time or proper learning experiences. In the best interest of the student-athletes and the team, we must keep all our teams to a reasonable number where each child can expect a realistic opportunity to play in games, learn the sport and receive quality instruction.Distribution of playing timeTo that end, players should also understand that the distribution of playing time changes as the level of competition increases. Freshman team members will all play in games approximately equal amounts of time. Junior varsity players will all see playing time in games but it may not be, and likely will not be, equal. Varsity is the highest level of competition the high school offers. A major goal of a varsity program is to compete at the highest level in an attempt to win. Therefore, players will not receive equal playing time. Some players may not receive much playing time during the season and some may not play in some games at all. Bear in mind that the coaches make every effort to make use of all players and aim to find roles for each student-athlete. However, we want each student and parent to understand the often complicated issue of playing time, well before the season begins. Please review the Offical Waltham High School Policies.
